Talavera Tiles

Talavera tile is Mexico’s most celebrated ceramic art form — a living tradition of hand painted decorative tile that traces its origins to the 16th-century workshops of Puebla and Dolores Hidalgo. Place of Clay offers one of the largest selections of authentic Talavera tile in the American Southwest, with hundreds of patterns spanning traditional, transitional, and contemporary designs.

Every Talavera tile we sell is handmade and hand painted by skilled Mexican artisans. The process begins with hand-formed clay, followed by an initial firing, then hand application of the tin-based white glaze that gives Talavera its characteristic luminous background. Artisans then paint each design freehand using mineral-based pigments before a final high-temperature firing fuses the decoration permanently into the glaze.

Our Talavera collection includes field tiles, borders, accent pieces, address numbers, and multi-tile murals. Available in sizes from 2-inch accent tiles to 6-inch field format, these tiles are perfect for kitchen backsplashes, bathroom walls, stair risers, fireplace surrounds, fountain installations, and any surface that deserves the beauty of genuine Mexican ceramic art.
